Dear Reader,
The concluding part of the Vedas called Vedanta. This is the final conclusion and of philosophic in nature. The high philosophy is not understandable for a common man.
Upanishads are that part of vedanta, which gives the philosophy in simple terms for the common man to understand. However, Upanishads as such are a way of experiencing the Ultimate Bliss. As human nature varies from person to person, ways for experiencing the Bliss also vary.
Hinduism accepts this nature and gives as many ways as possible, for that Ultimate experience.
Though Upanishads are philosophical, they impliedly give out many meditation techniques for the welfare of Mankind and for enlightenment.
A number of Upanishads are taken out from Vedas. Out of them, 14 Upanishads are considered most important. Sri. Adi Sankaracharya's commentary is available for 10 among them.
Name of those 14 Upanishads, along with the vedas from which they are taken are as follows:
Aithreya, Kousiitaki - Rig Veda
Isa, Kada, Taithriiya,
Brugatharanyaka,
Swedasvatra,
Maitrayani,
Maha Narayana - Yajur Veda
Kena, Santhokya - Sama Veda
Prasna, Mundaka,
Mandukya - Atharva Veda
With this little introduction, let us see some of the upanishads in detail with commentary in English and Tamil.
Please feel free to express your views.
In the service of Mankind.
